The latest Flatliners trailer makes the sequel look like one of the most disturbing movies of the year. In the 1990 film, Kevin Bacon, Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland also appeared to return to the same story.
Like the original 1990 cult classic, the new Flatliners hinges on a group of young doctors (Ellen Page, James Norton, Diego Luna, Kiersey Clemons and Nina Dobrev) experimenting on whether humans can live beyond death.
Judging by the hellscape that these doctors unleash when they begin recklessly testing each other’s survival beyond clinical death, we’d surmise that the answer to that question is definitely, “Noooooooooo!”
This pseudo-sequel comes from Danish director Niels Arden Oplev, who previously unsettled international audiences with the original adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
While he’s not shown in the latest trailer, original Flatliners star Kiefer Sutherland does have a supporting role as a character who should be quite familiar to fans of the 1990 movie.
“I play a professor at the medical university,” Sutherland recently hinted. “It is never stated but it will probably be very clearly understood that I’m the same character I was in the original Flatliners, but that I have changed my name and I’ve done some things to move on from the experiments that we were doing in the original film.”
He went on to say: “I loved making the first film and when I was asked if I would be interested in taking part in this, it didn’t take more than a minute to say yes.”
Flatliners will arrive in UK and US cinemas on Friday, September 29.
